Paper examines potentialities of composite air-breathing engines and presents some examples of combination of ramjet and turbine engines, on which practical experience has been gained; reference is made to supersonic flight testing conducted with Griffon, turbo-ramjet-powered, 1953-designed, Mach 2.2 experimental aircraft; general approach to problem of compound power plants is set forth and results of latest research are presented; it is shown how additional sophistication, involving use of cryogenics, might extend efficient operating range into hypersonic regime.
