Pegasus is ducted fan engine of high bypass ratio, giving large takeoff thrust/weight ratio with low cruise specific fuel consumption; further development led to BS 100, h-p ratio ducted fan engine with bypass ratio of near unity having thrust boost achieved by means of combustion in cold bypass stream, thrust boost being necessary for takeoff, transonic acceleration and supersonic flight; method of providing thrust boost is known as Plenum Chamber Burning (PCB); benefits to engine cycle from PCB are increase in installed thrust/weight ratio, in ratio of takeoff thrust/optimum cruise thrust, and improvement in transonic acceleration and supersonic cruise.
