Naval Air Test Center is engaged in development of method for measuring in-flight net thrust for turbojet airplanes; most satisfactory methods stuied were Gas Generator method and Traversing Rake method; latter system is composed of hydraulic rotary actuator, torque shaft assembly that is coaxial with actuator, and rake which measures total and static pressures, and temperature; automatic data processing system involves data acquisition via airborne analog magnetic tape, analog to digital conversion, computer processing on IBM 7030-Stretch System, high speed printing and cathode ray tube plotting; concept was evaluated using North American Vigilante airpalen; system provided exceptional accuracy of thrust measurement.
