Exterior airframe surfaces are being defined by conic equations, which are then used to program numerically controlled machines that produce required contours directly in tooling and components at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp; this not only eliminates several intermediate steps in conventional airframe manufacture but makes it possible to obtain more accurate and consistent exterior aircraft shapes.
