U S Bureau of Naval Weapons originated project to determine, within realm of aircraft behavior, feasibility of flight operations from circular runway; on existing circular track at General Motors Proving Ground near Mesa, Ariz, tests were conducted with T28, A1-E, A4-B, and C54; it was found that pilots readily adapt to operations from circular runway, that aircraft lateral and directional stability is more positive than on flat runway, that tangential approaches are no more difficult than approaches to straight runway, and that low visibility approaches are much simpler than to straight runway; flight operations from circular runway are feasible.
