Paper reports efforts carried out by Chevrolet Motor Div to define desirable fluid characteristics and describes test procedures developed to evaluate transmission fluids; transmission characteristics are established and influence of fluids examined; results of various tests show that fluid characteristics necessary for optimum transmission operation comprise initial friction characteristics necessary for adequate shift performance, friction retention described in terms of clutch lockup time vs hours of transmission operation, abuse capacity, and friction activity.
