Types of balloons used for meteorological research, namely, extensible, zero-pressure, superpressure, and open-appendix hot-air balloon, are described, pointing out capabilities and limitations of each type; emphasis is on zero-pressure balloon which carries heaviest loads to highest balloon altitudes and is used most in scientific research; design features, launch procedures and reliability of zero-pressure balloons; possible design improvement with respect to material and manufacture.
