New units are called Mathews-Henry actuators and incorporate additional safety devices which operate if trailer should accidently become detached from its tractor; unit is mounted on extreme front of trailer; in operation brakes are self-regulating; heavier load on trailer will increase its inertia and increase travel of master cylinder casing over piston thus applying brakes harder; increasing downhill gradient will have same effect.
