Tests were conducted in Jackson Lock to investigate hawser forces resulting from hydraulic forces acting on tow of loaded barges during lock filling and emptying operations; hawser forces with both rigid and cable connections, culvert-valve openings, slope of lock water surface, and tow movement were measured; prototype hawser loads were similar to rigid-connection model results when cable connections were used at all four corners of prototype tow, but were generally greater than model results when rigid connections were used in prototype.
