Knocking characteristics of fuels are evaluated by comparing them with reference fuels under prescribed conditions in standard engines; knocking tendency of engine is evaluated by determining reference fuel composition which gives knock of specified intensity when used in engine at throttle opening giving maximum knock; high altitude effects.
