Todd bath shipyard at Portland, planned on basis of building vessels in sunken basins or graving docks; by use of sunken basins, ships are constructed in horizontal position on even keel, eliminating necessity for shipways for constantly making corrections by use of declivity boards, owing to angular position of vessels; in launching, vessels are simply floated by letting water into basins until level coincides with that of river.
