Optimization of cylinders stiffened externally with rings and/or stringers of rectangular cross section is described which accounts for several restraints on structure; optimum designs may be determined when cylinder-wall thickness is fixed and when height of rings and/or stringers is limited by maximum plate thickness commercially obtainable; results of study of effect of restraints and other factors on structural weight are presented; use of rings and stringers is more efficient than use of either type of stiffener alone, with degree of improvement governed by restraints imposed.
