Examination of applicable ballasting specifications for 400-w metallic-additive lamp as compared with ASA specifications for H33 mercury lamp shows that main difference between specifications is in open-circuit voltage and lamp-current crest-factor requirements; metallic-additive lamp needs higher open-circuit voltage to satisfy starting requirements and must be provided with maximum lamp current crest factor of 1.8 as compared with 2.0 for H33 lamp; reactor ballast, autotransformer ballast, regulated ballast, and lead peaked ballast are discussed and starting requirements and significant data taken on different ballasts are tabulated.
