Seven years of research by British Railways resulted in introduction of appropriate degree of damping into system, by control of level of contact wire, and grading stiffness of contact system in such way as to give smoothest possible dynamic pantograph trajectory; these results were achieved at minimum cost and it is shown how requirements were met more cheaply using modified simple catenary with contact wire sag in place of compound catenary equipment previously used for speeds exceeding 75 mph.
