Results of practical and theoretical studies initiated by British Railways to test and improve catenary lines; satisfactory results were obtained when gentle stiffness gradient had been established on both sides of bridge, so that rate of change of stiffness was kept to minimum; success of these measures led to modification of open route compound catenary used for Euston to Crewe electrification by closing up droppers to contact wire at mid-span and spacing them out under supports; calculated distribution of upward thrust of pantograph between droppers.
