Technique has been evolved which introduces single factor (S, for sophistication) to evaluate complete engine flow paths; it is based on polytropic analytical method, and involves some approximations that are justified by error analysis; it is no substitute for detail cycle analysis, but can be used effectively to evaluate existing engines and predict future trends; when related to statistics, it provides means of evaluating proposed or existing engines with respect to current technology status; corresponding technique for dealing with recuperators is also presented.
