Unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of helicopter rotor operating in vortex ring state were experimentally investigated; time histories of thrust, torque, and rpm of rotor were measured by use of sensing devices, installed on shaft of rotor; results obtained show that in vortex ring state, thrust fluctuates violently, whereas torque fluctuates very little; induced power obtained from thrust and torque data was compared with that obtained from momentum theory; existence of periodicity in thrust fluctuation also was observed in some regions of vortex ring state.
