Tasks tend to be performed faster and more accurately when they require responses which, in view of past experience, are most expected or 'natural' ones; application of this principle to traffic system design is expected to reduce difficulty of driving; its implications for traffic signal coding are subject of investigation; consideration of right-of-way in terms of population expectancies and existing laws suggests that there is need to re-examine present right of way system; material derived from interviews with drivers is included.
