Special purpose mine and plant locomotives are equipped with heavy solid flywheel which serves as energy storage; they are being built in Soviet Union with flywheel masses ranging from 380 to 1835 kg and flywheel speeds from 1500 to 6000 rpm; method is presented for determining optimum parameters of these flywheels from viewpoint of maximum inertial energy and minimum aerodynamic friction losses.
