Public Service of New Jersey developed their brake maintenance practices to point where they have eliminated much of troubles usually experienced, such as squeal, short life, etc; method consists of starting with round, smooth drum, then packing as much lining as possible between trued drum and brake shoes, with brake cam as near zero as possible to permit only minimum travel of brake chamber push rod; advantages listed.
