Problems encountered in use of large military rockets as satellite launching vehicles with respect to selection of thrust angle program during second stage, so that maximum velocity is attained at coasting apogee; under given assumptions, determination of optimum trajectory is reduced to 1-parameter iteration; forms derived for second and total variation permit investigation of conditions which insure mathematically optimum paths; calculation is presented, using Vanguard data as parameters.
