Developments include continued growth in use of Diesel power, appearance of self propelled, hydraulic transmission, Diesel rail motor car, operation in revenue service of oil burning gas turbine locomotive, easing in supply of Diesel fuel, increase in number of roads using sized and washed coal, and emergence of proof that modernization of existing steam locomotives and maintenance facilities can be repaid out of savings in less than 3 yr.
