Fatigue failures resulting from decarburized steel surfaces are discussed; micrographs show decarburization at surface of four standard rails from four rail mills; fatigue cracks in rail, in joint bars, Diesel locomotive wheels and in valve rocker arm are discussed and illustrated; responsibility of designers of railroad materials stressed.
