In ship operation practical cases arise where unpowered vessel is towed by powered vessel by means of towline; minimum resistance is experienced when vessel tows in straight line; investigation of steadiness on course of towed vessel; problem is attacked by Rouths' general method amplified to suit given case; criteria of stability are expressed as far as possible in terms of non-dimensional coefficients.
