Analysis of military, scientific, and commercial applications from viewpoint of airframe manufacturing industry; two well documented systems chosen for cost estimation; intercontinental satellite television relay system proposed by I.R. PIERCE, and 4-man scientific-military satellite system proposed by K.A.EHRICKE; it is shown that two feasible systems of "near" future (10 to 25 yr) cost under 1 billion dollars apiece, much less than is being spent yearly on aircraft and missiles by Air Force alone.
