Studies of motive power requirements, and operating experience with 25 locomotives in fast freight service on Union Pacific Railroad, led to design of larger unit capable of producing performance desired by railroad at economical operating and maintenance costs; problems which had to be solved in design and construction of locomotive and its power plant.
