In two investigations reported, noise levels due to 1100 vehicles were measured individually under similar conditions, and also was measured at 140 sites, note being taken of traffic volume and composition; importance of trucks and buses in contributing to high noise levels is discussed, as are effect of gradients and speed; also measurements near existing roadways are reported, both with respect to traffic volume and to distance from roadway; planning to mitigate effect of traffic noise on environment is discussed, with special reference to use of acoustic barriers; paper concludes with summary of Greater London Council's policy on traffic noise.
