Methods used in plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co, Allenport, Pa, in manufacture of hollow steel railroad axles, in which approximately 65 tons of steel are being saved per day; plant produces average of 500 railroad axles per day; each axle for 50-ton freight car will weigh 260 lb less than its solid steel predecessor; this is saving in weight of 1040 lb for each car, with greater poundage for cars of heavier capacity.
