Conclusions are: normal petroleum hydrocarbon fuels will permit starting of best automotive engines at temperatures not below 20 F without supplementary starting aids; materials blended into normal Diesel fuels to improve cetane number and cold starting may give reduction in minimum starting temperatures of not over 20-25 F; ethyl ether introduced into air stream of Diesel engines will allow starting down to at least 40 F without additional starting aids.
