Paper describes various factors contributing to life of tramway rail, and outlines some of methods adopted in Adelaide with object of prolonging rail life generally; design and chemical composition of rails, causes of rail wear, corrugation and corrosion of rails, "in situ" process of hardening surface of rails, electric welding process of "building up" head and check of rails around curves, and manufacture of junction special work with steel rails.
