Production and preservation in war time; canvas finds many applications on shipboard in form of tarpaulins, covers, coal bags, sailcloth buckets, fire hose and other items; British sailcloth is, for most part, produced from long flax fiber, which combines flexibility and lightness with strength, each warp having from 14 to 48 double threads; American sailcloth or "duck" is mostly made of cotton.
