Most efficient speed for ship's propeller is of order of 100 rpm or less; Diesel engine is particularly hard on gearing which is thus rendered necessary; electric drive offers ideal reduction gearing; electric drive reduces any tendency of propellers to race in rough sea, and reduced vibration is important for passenger vessels; d-c versus a-c systems.
