It is first necessary to decide on duration, thrust, and combustion chamber pressure of motor, and on propellants; main components considered in turn; pumps and turbine should be designed together; impulse turbines and high speed centrifugal pumps are almost invariably used; importance of avoiding cavitation; method by which shape and size of combustion chamber may be determined, also chamber wall thickness; injectors, igniters and valves.
