Light-weight engines must run at high speeds, utilize high-strength materials at high stresses, and develop high mean effective pressure; with equal mean effective pressures, Diesel engines can be made only about 15 per cent heavier than corresponding gasoline engines for motorcoach and motor-truck service; advantages and disadvantages of plain and auxiliary combustion chambers; foundry conditions limit lightness; mechanical details of Treiber engines.
