Automatically controlled substations in operation in Southend, Westcliff, Leigh and Thorpe Bay; bulk supply is obtained from County of London Co.'s Barking power station, but original steam and Diesel driven d.c. generators at London Road station in Southend and at auxiliary stations at Leigh and Thrope Bay, are retained to supply peak load; stations are equipped with rotary converters ranging between 750 to 1150 kw. and serve for lighting and street railroad supply at 480/520 volt and 510/570 volt d.c. 2-wire and 3-wire.
