Keen competition in automotive industry has forced rapid refinement of facilities and processes, while lack of competition, etc., has permitted railroad shop to continue in service many facilities and methods which might be discarded; railroads have failed to develop same kind of trained men as are found in engineering divisions of large manufacturing plants; just how far it is advisable to develop such organization in railroad shop is question to be decided only after careful analysis of benefits to be derived.
