Author takes up question of permissible standard frame spacing and contrasts progress of frame strength-weight ratio over last 25 years; emphasizes governing importance of impact stresses in any attempt to increase frame spacing; investigation is restricted to side and bottom structure, but in principle can also be extended to deck beams and plating.
