Remarks based on paper by Baker and Kent read in 1919 before Instn. of Engrs. and Shipbldrs. of Scotland, giving formula for optimum midship area; author claims that formula does not give best value for midship-section area; value 6 : 29 is not derived from large number of model results as is generally supposed, and whole formula is of no more value than that of acting as crosscheck to interlock preliminary calculations for ship form and speed.
