Within recent years specifications have become more exhaustive and definite; it is becoming fairly general for owners to stipulate minimum metacentric height which must be obtained by vessel when light; penalties suggested by some owners for defect in initial stability are very heavy, and perhaps out of all proportion to importance of point, for several of most successful and popular passenger ships which have ever plied on Atlantic have had negative initial stability and have given very many years' service.
