P. and O. liner Himalaya was finest steamship in merchant service; dimensions were 372 ft. 9 in. length o.a., by 46.2 ft. beam, by 34.9 ft. depth of hold, gross tonnage of 3434; original engines were two-cylinder trunk machines by John Penn and Sons, cylinders having diameter of 84 in. with stroke of 42 in., developing 2500 i.hp. at 55 r.p.m.; 13.9 knots on trial and 13.5 on maiden run from Gibraltar to Malta.
