System offers passive method of orbit determination and yet maintains parameters relative to earth or lunar reference points; it provides vehicle attitude, position and velocity by onboard calculations using measurements taken by on-board instrumentation; such systems have no buildup of instrument error with time and do not depend on ground tracking support to maintain high accuracy and control of its own trajectory parameters; computer simulation programs determine magnitudes of net errors obtained from given navigation system; discrepancies between predicted and actual measurements are given filter factors and added to actual measurements to produce best estimate of vehicle position and velocity.
