Effectiveness of solar shield in providing thermal control of Sun-oriented space vehicle traveling from Earth to within 9 million mi from Sun is studied; experimental temperature changes of shielded vehicle are compared with predicted values obtained from previously developed radiative heat-transfer analysis; capsule tested was conical in shape and shield was flat disk; tests were conducted in 4×5-ft vacuum chamber at pressure level of less than 5×10-6 torr.
