Paper is based upon work conducted by North American Aviation. Inc, for NASA relating to concept of Lunar Exploration System for Apollo (LESA); paper describes system support requirements, possible types of payloads, and their placement and frequency requirements on lunar surface with respect to advanced launch vehicle requirements; description of LESA concept; scientific mission objectives and requirements; scientific mission base concept is presented to satisfy minimum requirements for support as presently envisioned; plan for lunar base implementation and some special payloads are outlined together with modular concept for scientific payloads.
