Effects of meteoroid-protection weight requirements on space-exploration costs are examined; basis is developed for selecting upper and lower bounds to acceptable risk; present knowledge of meteoroid environment and of hypervelocity impact penetration is examined and criteria are established suitable for selecting methods of designing single-and multisheet, and multisheet-plus-filler barriers; most important components are cabins, equipment compartments, propellant tanks, and space radiators, with special attention given to windows, optical surfaces, and space suits.
