Maximum capability of aero-space vehicle can be determined quickly and accurately using steepest-ascent optimization procedure developed at Raytheon Co; performance of specific re-entry vehicle was calculated using computer; procedure generates sequence of improved control histories, culminating in one which extremalizes prescribed terminal quantity called pay-off, while satisfying specified set of terminal and in-flight constraints; procedure yields not only vehicle's performance limits but, in addition, sequence of successively improved trajectories together with their control histories.
