Pneumatic tires will permit steeper grades, faster starting and stopping, smoother, quieter and safer operation, and are also expected to reduce construction costs; traction and guidance system is more complex, includes combination of 4 large rubber tire driving wheels, 4 smaller rubber wheels on vertical axis for lateral guidance, and 4 steel wheels; latter act as brake drums, are mounted on same axle as large rubber tires in inboard position; steel wheels have deep flange which ride slot containing steel rail; flange is to provide guidance at track switches and has safety function.
