Studies had shown use of special materials for tanks to carry cargo at -258 F to be less expensive than special hull materials; on this basis, information is given about general arrangement of ship and tanks, insulation, selection of materials, design of tanks, and cargo handling system; operating experience with three tankers is discussed. Extracts from 38th Thomas Lowe Gray Lecture before Instn Mech Engrs, 1966. (See also Motor Ship v 46 n 548 Mar 1966 p 546P-546Q, 547-9)
