Term doubles is defined as two short single-axled semitrailers, coupled in train type combination; power dolly is self-contained power unit installed in converter dolly, used between trailers in doubles operation, to provide additional tractive effort plus additional horsepower for performance to assist in meeting schedules when adverse weather and road conditions prevail; description of various approaches taken leading to development of prototype power unit using Cummins V6-130 engine with Dana 13-in. 2-stage converter, built into differential drop-in unit to make single transaxle to which engine could be directly bolted; results of field tests are given.
