5200 m long tunnel driven at elevation of 1600 m through Felbertauern mountain range in vicinity of Salzburg provides snow-free connection between Austria and Italy and is designed for traffic at 1000 cars/hr; turning point caverns 24 m long 20 m wide and 9 m high are provided every 1300 m; noteworthy feature of construction method was absence of railway tracks, as all drilling, mucking, and concreting was done using tire-wheeled equipment.
