Concept of matching sidewall hovercraft to rotary-wing aircraft in form of air-cushion helicopter carriers is examined and speed vs power capabilities of sidewall hovercraft are compared with those of conventional displacement and high-speed planing vessels; it is shown that for given deck area requirement and for same speed, sidewall hovercraft requires between one-quarter and one-third that of planing craft; types of helicopter which are proposed for Hovermarine application include small turbine-powered Agusta A106 which, in addition to carrying two homing torpedoes, can perform variety of military tasks; some tasks are indicated.
